  • In the week ending 2 August 2024 (Week 31), 10,267 deaths were registered in England and Wales (including non-residents), an increase from 10,169 in the previous week (Week 30).
  • The number of deaths registered in Week 31 was 7.0% lower than the expected number (768 fewer deaths).
  • In the week ending 2 August 2024, 13.6% of registered deaths involved influenza or pneumonia (1,396 deaths), while 2.2% involved coronavirus (COVID-19) (226 deaths).
  • In the same week, influenza or pneumonia were the underlying cause of 3.3% of deaths (341 deaths), while COVID-19 was the underlying cause of 1.4% of deaths (142 deaths).
  • In Week 31 of 2024, 11,704 deaths were registered in the UK.

Deaths registered in England and Wales

In the week ending 26 July 2024 (Week 30), 10,169 deaths were registered in England and Wales. Of these, 9,490 were registered in England and 655 were registered in Wales (Figure 1).

Provisional counts of the number of deaths registered in England and Wales, by age, sex and region, in the latest weeks for which data are available. Includes the most up-to-date figures available for deaths involving coronavirus (COVID-19).

Data sources and quality

We publish timely, provisional counts of death registrations in our Deaths registered weekly in England and Wales, provisional dataset. These are presented:

  • by sex
  • by age group
  • by place of death
  • by selected causes of death
  • for regions (within England)
  • for Wales as whole

To allow time for registration and processing, figures are published 12 days after the end of the week. We also provide provisional updated totals for death occurrences based on the latest available death registrations.

With each week's publication, we also update the data for previous weeks within our dataset, for both death registrations and occurrences.

Data sources

The weekly figures that the Office for National Statistics (ONS) produces are for England and Wales only and are from the formal death registration process. They are published each week to provide users with timely data and capture seasonal trends.
